Oral Surgery

メニュー

Patient Care

We mainly treat the following diseases centering on oral diseases in cooperation with other departments in our hospital and other hospitals in our community.

Oral Cancer

We treat oral cancer (malignant tumor) by surgery (malignant tumor resection, reconstruction, etc.), radiotherapy, anticancer drug treatment in cooperation with other departments in our hospital.
Postoperative rehabilitation is important to improve oral function. We cooperate with speech therapists in Rehabilitation Department and focus on oral function rehabilitation using palatal augmentation prostheses / jaw prostheses.

Jaw Deformity

It is caused by abnormal shape, size or position of jawbones and it leads to malocclusion, difficulty articulating, etc. First we perform presurgical orthodontic treatment, and then we perform surgery to correct the jawbone.
Note: We are a designated medical institution to provide disabled children with medical care and rehabilitation.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

For the patients suffering from the symptoms such as “jaw pain” or “difficulty opening the mouth”, we carry out arthroscopic lavage treatment to reduce pain and improve limited opening of the mouth. We provide occlusal treatment with mouthpieces or deal with muscle-contraction headache upon patients’ request.

Eating Disorder / Dysphagia

It is a condition making it difficult to send food from the mouth to the digestive tract such as the stomach and the intestines. It is caused by various factors including paralysis as a result of a cerebrovascular accident such as cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, etc., a neuromuscular disorder, cancerous pain and psychological problems. Some severe cases may accompany dysarthria, which makes it difficult to pronounce words.
Hideki Sekiya, associate professor and the chair of our department, has been working on rehabilitation for dysarthria over 20 years. In particular, he has made a lot of achievement regarding treatments with palatal augmentation prostheses which are attached on the maxilla of the patient with impaired tongue mobility. It helps the tongue touches the roof of your mouth, and improves tongue function.
Furthermore, we comprehensively support the patients with eating disorder / dysphagia as part of the dysphagia control team in our hospital as well as support swallowing function assessment in coordination with other medical institutions / home-visit dentists or doctors in our community.

Jawbone Defect

We perform dental implant placement procedures including bone graft, socket lift and sinus lift for the patients with difficulty in placement of dental implant due to low bone mass. We carry out the procedures after measuring the thickness of the bone precisely by helical CT. As a result, there is hardly any possibility of trouble such as the implant contacts with a nerve or goes through the upper jaw. We have the advantage of a high success rate of placement.
We only carry out placement procedures. Upper structure of implants (prostheses) is covered by our affiliate dentists in the community.
We also perform surgery to place “jawbone support appliance” for the patients with wide range of jawbone defect caused by cancer, osteomyelitis of the jaw and trauma.
In principle, we provide artificial dental root (implant) treatment to only the patients referred from another department in our hospital or other medical institutions in our community. We do not provide the implant treatment either for jawbone defect caused by periodontal disease or aging nor for the purpose of aesthetics.
However, we consider to see the patients who had trouble after receiving implant treatment at other hospitals.

Maxillofacial Defect

We treat it with dental implant and jaw denture.

Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS)

In cooperation with the respiratory department in our hospital, we treat the patients diagnosed with mild-to-moderate SAS using oral appliances (mouthpieces). The fixed oral appliances are commonly used for SAS, however, we developed our unique ones (Toho-style OA) which allow the patients to adjust the protrusion range by themselves depending on their condition. We have already applied the OA to 200 or more cases as of March 2015.

Residual Ridge and Vestibular Extension

We perform jawbone regeneration therapy such as preprosthetic surgery and distraction osteogenesis.

Others

We treat the following diseases in cooperation with other related departments.
  • Jaw osteonecrosis associated with a severe side effect caused by osteoclastic inhibitor such as bisphosphonate which is a medicine for osteoporosis and advanced cancer. Prophylactic tooth-extraction to prevent infection caused by medication or operation.
  • Surgical oral treatment for the patients undergoing anticoagulant medication for cerebrovascular disorders such as cerebral infarction or circulatory diseases.
  • Dental hygiene care for the patients scheduled for kidney transplant or joint replacement surgery.
